Dressing in Layers

Winter is coming. As autumn comes to a close and blustery weather approaches it is important to dress appropriately. Dressing in layers allows you to quickly add or remove clothing to maintain body temperature that is comfortable depending on activity levels or weather conditions to prevent sweating.
Here in Ireland we have cold rain most of the winter. By dressing in this layer system you can keep from overheating or getting too damp from exercise.

Base Layer:
The best material for base layers is silk or merino wool. This layer should be thin and breathable. This first layer will wick sweat away from your body and keep you dry during outdoor activities. Wool blends are preferable as they will keep you warm even when wet.
Do not use cotton material since it traps the sweat and holds moisture next to the skin. Cotton is called “Death Cloth” for a reason.

Mid-Layer:
This layer should have fluffy material that will absorb the sweat from the base layer. This thicker layer will offer protection from the cold by trapping heat close to the body. Fleece, polypro or wool is the preferable option. This layer should be easily removed if physical activities are causing overheating.

Outer Layer:
The outer layer keeps out the wind, rain and snow. There are many options including windproof fleeces, Gortex, and wool jackets. Find one that offers breathable material so moisture is not trapped in the Mid-layer. Keep in mind that Bushcraft activities can be rough on fabrics. That expensive Gortex jacket is worthless once is has a few tears. Wool is the only safe option that will hold up to a weekend in the woods and still keep you warm if it gets wet.

Head:
A lot of heat can be lost from the head. It might not seem very cold here in Ireland but a hat is a must. Even a ball cap will be helpful and the bill will keep that misty rain off of the face.

Hands:
In Bushcraft it is important to keep the hands warm and protected. Get a good pair of leather gloves that will keep the cuts and scrapes at bay.

Feet:
A good pair of boots is important. They should have a good tread for walking over stones and bog. Find a pair that is waterproof. Have a layered system for socks as well. The first layer should be thin and snug. Use silk or nylon. The second pair of socks should be thick and absorbent. Again wool is the better choice.

In review, the main function for each of the three clothing layers is:
The first layer wicks moisture away from the body.
The second layer traps body heat in order to keep warm.
The third layer sheds water and wind.
