Book Review: Deep Survival

This is one of those books that must be read once per year. I have had this book for two years now and am just about ready for my third read. I also downloaded this book as an audio book. Anna and I are fond of listening to books as we drive or work around the homestead.

Deep Survival summary: In extraordinary circumstances, like accidents or catastrophes, some people survive and others die, such that sometimes things lead you to believe that the first ones die and the second ones survive; this book explains, using numerous stories of accidents and catastrophes, and by exploring the latest scientific theories – from neuroscience to the theory of chaos – what makes one person die and another survive.

This book discusses what it takes to make it or break it in the deep woods. He looks into why some people survive and some people just lay down and die. A lot of this has to do with the way you think and the way you look at the world.

Yes, training is a major priority. But lets face the facts: There have been plenty of completely untrained civilians who have survived in extreme conditions without knowing what to do. They just did it. Why?

Read this book as a supplement to your survival training.
